Rahul Dev Burman: Manoranjan (1974)

Manoranjan

'Manoranjan' [review] is a great sounding RD Burman score. Arguably sans any very memorable stand-out tracks, but still, a great sounding RD Burman score. See, it's all in the arrangements, the details, the adventurousness. The Moog and close harmony singing in 'Dulhan Maike Chali', the Oriental beat kicking off 'Aaya Hoon Main Tujhko Le Jaoonga', the playfulness of the two instrumentals (banjos, tubas, fiddles)... it's all in the diversity. Entertainment Unlimited? Damn straight.

Track listing:
1. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar & Chorus: Dulhan Maike Chali
2. Entertainment Unlimited (Music)
3. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey & Chorus: Goyake Chunanche Kiya Main Ne Pyar
4. Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar: Aaya Hoon Main Tujhko Le Jaoonga
5. Cat Fight (Music)
6. Asha Bhosle: Chori Chori Solah Shringar Karoongi

  3. Thanks PC, this is one of RDB's best. The movie was directed by Shammi Kapoor and based on Irma la Douce.

Yes, the new links are working fine.

  5. A very underrated RD score... this movie has been directed by the thespian.. the living legend - Shammi Kapoor - his first bdirectorial venture and was a sex comedy! A movie way ahead of it's times!
Thanx PC... waiting for future releases as always!

  6. Desperately off the point, have you got a 1981 Lahiri cheesoid called "Sahhas"?

  7. Good good, glad downloading is working.
And sorry Litlgrey, never heard of that one.

  8. Awesome, I'm gonna grab this for the instrumentals. "Aaya Hoon Main Tujhko Le Jaoonga" is totally bonkers, both the audio with the way multiple styles of music are blended together and the video because of the crazy sets and humorous antics of the leads.

"Chori Chori" is diametrically different but excellent too. Before my YouTube account got suspended I had that up, reached several hundred thousand views pretty quickly... I wonder why. ;)

Ahh, Sahhas, home of Bappi's classic Disco Badshah... I used to have that song in heavy rotation on my iPod for a while before I came to my senses, lol. I have the album but forget the original source, probably ripped from some awful CD which might've done a hack job on the tunes.

  10. "Disco Badshah" appeared on a 1982 sampler called "Disco Hungama" which I downloaded from a blog called Old Junk or Treasure. That's what put the bug in my ear.

  11. Oh wow, that Disco Hungama compilation looks nice, I'll need to grab that once I get home! If you're interested litlgrey, I can post the rips of Sahhas later on (if PC doesn't mind, of course).

  13. Love this film, love the music. Shammi told me (I'm sorry I cannot resist) that he saw Irma La Douce on a London stage in 1962(?) and wanted to make it in Hindi film form from that day itself. Took him a while, but it's a lot of fun and he said he had a blast making it.

  16. Hi PC! Recently discovered some of these nice blogs & its really interesting to get my hands on some rare old music including the reviews. But 1thing to ask, you started with 128 kbps & gradually moved to 192 kbps. Why not 320 kbps which is the max possible quality. I don't understand music & techincalities related to it that well, but nowadays 320 is the norm, thats why asked.

    Thanks

  17. A couple of reasons really, but primarily it's because I don't see the point. If these were CDs, I'd have ripped them at 320 kbps. They are however, to a large extent anyway, badly mastered and shoddily pressed vinyls (see this post), and no amount of increased bit rate will make them sound any better. Believe me, I've tried.

Also, in the eventuality that I'm treading on toes of any legitimate copyright holders (I'm probably not, but seeing as I've previously had all files deleted by people who claim they are…), I have a vain hope they'll leave the blog alone if I post at comparatively low bit rates.

  24. Shame it's 128 kbps, symaster, but I certainly can't complain... thank you very much! I located cover art for it already (for a change - usually doing that on the web is hard as hell).

  25. Cover art....hmmm.....can someone posts links here to some record cover sites?? :)

  27. im also a huge fan of this film, and soundtrack... it is truly one of a kind..and the camera shots are very creative... I love Shammi's character in this film.. and Sanjeev Kumar is excellent too.. Zeenat plays the vamp with a style grace that no one else could pull off...

  30. It's a nice looking collection…. however, and while I'm in no way claiming any rights in connection with the covers I've scanned for the 3rd Floor gallery, I generally think it sucks when someone simply takes images from other people's galleries or web sites to make their own, without giving any credit.

  31. You are most welcome litlgrey :)

PC - Yep, I know what you mean. I think I also saw some covers from your gsllery over there! Anyway, I love the way you scan and edit the covers. They look wayy too good.
