S.D. Burman: Tere Mere Sapne (1971)

Téré Méré Sapné

When I first started acquiring Bollywood soundtracks, upon realizing that they could be real patchy affairs, and acknowledging that there was no way I'd be able to remember Hindi song titles, I used to stick Post-it notes on them, jotting down which (if any) tracks would be worth coming back to.

The note on the cover of 'Tere Mere Sapne' [review] says "none". Consequently I hadn't played it more than the once.

I have no idea where my head was at the time of listening... how could I not have noticed 'Phur Udchala'? Such a wonderfully happy sounding cabaret number, very much in the vein of Burman Jr. (who probabaly had a hand in the arranging), a lovely melody, fun instrumental details, an infectious syncopated beat; I love it. One of my most played Bollywood tunes at the moment.

As for the rest, 'Hey Maine Kasam Li' and 'Jaise Radha Ne Mala Japi' are, if not as memorable as the above, also quite nice and should have at least warranted a parenthesis on the Post-it.

Track listing:
1. Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar: Hey Maine Kasam Li
2. Asha Bhosle: Mera Sajan Phool Kamal Ka
3. Lata Mangeshkar: Jaise Radha Ne Mala Japi
4. Asha Bhosle: Ta Thai Tat Thai
5. Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar: Jeevan Ki Bagia
6. Asha Bhosle: Phur Udchala
7. Lata Mangeshkar: Mera Antar Ik Mandir
8. Manna Dey & Chorus: Suno Re Suno

  4. No I haven't, but I realize it's one that might be good.
And I don't hate on Bappi (nor any music; if something doesn't interest me I try not to waste attention on it), I just don't fancy his disco stuff much. If you look at the one's of his I've posted, you'll notice I quite like most of them.

  5. This is a good movie and a good soundtrack. I LOVE “Mera Saajan Phool Kamal Ka” (both for the song and for the Jayshree T. dance that goes with it). I'm also very fond of "Tha Thai Thatha Thai" (or however you spell that), but that's mainly because of the Hema Malini dance, which is one of her best.

I've been looking for these songs for a while, so thank you for posting this.

BTW, I wrote a review of the film here:

  11. Thanks for all the great songs and reviews.
I love "jaise radha ne mala japi" in particular, Mumtaz during the line "kya tarang hai kya umang hai" is imho at her sexiest best. what a face, what figure, what a way to carry herself. this song is a gem.
