Rahul Dev Burman: Jawani Diwani (1972)

Jawani Diwani

It's hard, sometimes, to find new things to say about a RD Burman score, circa 1971-73, that I haven't said before, and that doesn't come across as hyperbole. So I'm tempted to just leave 'Jawani Diwani' here for your almost guaranteed enjoyment, simply adding that 'Nahin Nahin Abhi Nahin' and 'Jane Jan Dhoondta Hun' are among RD's best ever tracks, highlighting what is a near flawless soundtrack.

'Nuff said?

Track listing:
1. Kishore Kumar & Chorus: Samne Ye Kaun Aya
2. Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle: Nahin Nahin Abhi Nahin
3. Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle: Jane Jan Dhoondta Hun
4. Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle: Agar Saaz Cheda
5. Kishore Kumar: Ye Jawani Hai Diwani
6. Asha Bhosle: Hai Tauba Mujhe Tune

  4. WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO! You are on FIRE PC ! What a great upload! This is a 1972 movie based on the college going youth and similar kinda spice.....typical 1970s Disco-theques, polka shirts, bell flares ! Damn nice ! =) This is prolly the only movie where Jaya Bhaduri (actress) looks best. Ahhh...truly wonderful! Thank you man! This is one of the greatest R D BURMAN scores....each song is mesmerizing.

  5. The song "Saamne Ye Kaun Aaya" with the R D BURMAN prelude was released only on the vinyl. Its a rarity. The other versions last 3 minutes 9 seconds while the original one is 6 minutes + in length. Very funky! The beats are too good.... =)

  6. man, I wish that the 70's thing would come back and stomp all over the hip hop derivative fashion of the last decade...

Thanks for posting another great LP!

  8. Sweet! This one ranks right up there as one of the best Burman scores of the early 70s. I was going to pass on this at first since I already had it, but I'm glad I didn't. Like harshi pointed out, "Samne Ye Kaun Aya" includes an amazing intro that I haven't found on any other recording. Plus the extra dialogues on most of the other tracks are a nice bonus as well.

There was another film released two years after 'Jawani Diwani' (with the same producer/director/lead actor & actress/lyricist/music director) called 'Dil Diwana' whose soundtrack IMHO is just as awesome, but I don't think the film & music were nearly as popular.

    Thanks yet again, PC.

  10. Hey PC,

It would be interesting to find out what your favourite RD tracks/albums are from what you have heard of his music.

I'm sure you've heard enough of his music to compile a list =).

    What say ?....Just curious.

I know your two favourites are "Aaj Ki Raat" and "Churaliya Hai Tumne".

I can't wait till you post Caravan, one of the Top 10 albums of RD IMHO.

  11. "Dil Deewana" was a truly amazing R D BURMAN soundtrack from 1974. The movie bombed at the box-office but the songs were truly wonderful. Especially the song "Kisise Dosti Kar Lo" is a true R D BURMAN gem (It can be found on YouTube for anyone who wants to listen immediately )
Keep up PC ! You are doing something which no one else did before. Your blog is one of its kind ! Thank you so much for all these posts.

  12. Number 5 is a massive tune but my fav is number 1 here followed by number 3. Incidentally Samne Ye Kaun Aaya is deliciously longer then the CD version, so a hearty thanks for your lovely version. :D

Just an FYI for the Burman fans who may not know. A previously unreleased movie called Yaar Meri Zindagi (starring vintage Amitabh and Shatrughan) was recently released straight to DVD, and quite recently the previously obscure soundtrack was also added to the iTunes catalog, among other online stores, so it can be previewed there. Someone has put vid up at youtube for one of the songs by Asha: "Naache Mera Pyar" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRePjhDyJyg

Also, for those who watched Dil Diwana is it supposed to be Sun Nita as in "listen, Nita" (as labeled on the CD sleeve) or is he singing "Sunita" as in the name? Either one works in the song but I was curious if the girl's name was Sunita or Nita, lol.

  13. Princeali: While I've occasionally toyed with the idea of compiling one or more best-of lists, chances are I won't. Mainly due to the fact that I change my mind about these things all the time. Yes, when blogging about 'Anamika' I was convinced that 'Aaj Ki Raat' was the greatest thing ever (and it'll probably always be among my favourites); the other day however I couldn't imagine a better song than a Madan Mohan one I'll be posting in the near future. Next week, it might be something else.

I could conceivably come up with a "50 Immaculate Bollywood Songs, in no particular order" type list... but, at the moment anyway, that sounds too much like work.

That said, I do enjoy reading other people's lists, so should anyone feel the urge and want to post something in the comments, feel free.

  14. deewani, I was wondering the same thing! What makes it even more confusing for me is that the IMDb entry for 'Dil Diwana' includes characters named Sunita AND Nita. Why do I get the feeling this song is meant for both, like a playboy serenading his multiple GFs?

Incidentally that reminds me of a song from Burman's 'Khalifa' soundtrack... seems like Randhir Kapoor was always pegged for these kinds of roles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mquzFVSkkbY

  15. symaster, I knew I recalled your user name from some vid yesterday, I was surfing youtube for "Amitabh breaking the third wall" vids yesterday and thought you might have been one of the uploaders of those scenes from Parvarish and Do Aur Do Paanch but it was YMZ after all, thanks very much for that, it inspired me to hunt the local shops for that DVD, if I can't get it there will order online. Hopefully someone who has seen Dil Diwana can comment. I'm a very "either/or" person, never occurred to me it could be both, very cool insight.

  18. Another great Randhir Kapoor (& I think RD Burman also) soundtrack is 'Harjaee' in which he stared with Tina Munium.

This was was one his last films before he faded into oblivion ... & then bacame known as Kareena Kapoor's Dad !

The music from 'Harjaee' is excellent if you have it ...
