Kalyanji Anandji: Upaasna (1971/1975)

Upaasna

'Meri Jawani' from 'Upaasna' was the very first Bollywood song I took notice of. It was being played at a club somewhere, and I subsequently did something I otherwise never do (far too self-conscious), namely ask the DJ what it was. Thus possibly planting the seeds for my interest in the genre. It's an outstanding track, from the 4-minute multi-layered intro (bossa nova, cool jazz, wild percussion) to the wonderfully poppy song itself. Love at first listen. Nothing wrong with the rest of the album either (horrendously lousy sound notwithstanding), especially the two other songs that make up the LP's side 2. And the furious 'Mujh Ko To Pina Hai'. A great soundtrack. (And such a cool cover.)

Incidently, the LP's label states "Recording first published 1975", while most movie sites list 'Upaasna' as being from 1971. I have no idea though if the latter are wrong (or if they all have their info from the IMBb, which is riddled with mistakes) or they just waited four years before releasing the album.

Track listing:
1. Mahendra Kapoor & Mukri: Kali Kali Sari
2. Mukesh: Darpan Ko Dekha
3. Asha Bhosle: Mujh Ko To Pina Hai
4. Lata Mangeshkar & Mohd. Rafi: Pyar Sikha Doon
5. Asha Bhosle: Tum Ne Apna Na Banana To
6. Asha Bhosle: Meri Jawani

  1. I'm already fortunate enough to have a 320 kbps rip of this, but your cover scan is much better - so thank you much!
