Kalyanji Anandji: Geet (1970)

Geet

From the liner notes: "The most memorable musical experience in recent movie history is Ramanand Sagar’s eastman colour 'Geet'. Award winning music maestros Kalyanji Anandji have delved deep down the rich storehouse of Indian musical tradition – both classical and modern, both oriental and occidental – and evolved a musical score of incomparable richness."

Be that as it may... this isn't really my favourite Kalyanji Anandji score. My own fault though; when I bought 'Geet' I'd just started getting into them, and having already been won over by stuff like 'Dharmatma', 'Johny Mera Naam' and 'Upaasna' I was hoping this too to would be a wild and groovy ride through funky Bollywood. Instead, it's traditional Indian from start to finish. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not what I was expecting at the time. (To be honest, I can't pick out any occidental touches at all.)

But I've actually come to like the album a lot more since I ripped it a few weeks ago. The songwriting is top notch; check out 'Mere Mitwa Mere Meet Re', 'Tere Naina Kyon Bhar Aaye' or 'Jo Dil Men Basai Th', all good. I reckon you can do a lot worse than give it a listen - especially those of you who, more than me, like their Indian sounds traditional.

Track listing:
1. Mohd. Rafi: Mere Mitwa Mere Meet Re
2. Lata Mangeshkar: Tere Naina Kyon Bhar Aaye
3. Mahendra Kapoor: Tere Naina Kyon Bhar Aaye
4. Asha Bhosle & Mohd. Rafi: Laila - Majnu - Opera
5. Lata Mangeshkar & Mohd. Rafi: Mere Mitwa Mere Meet Re
6. Mahendra Kapoor & Lata Mangeshkar: Jis Ke Sapne
7. Asha Bhosle: Jo Dil Men Basai Thi
8. Suman Kalyanpur: Bansuri Bajai Ke

  1. Woo Hoo! (Disco does a little dance). Thanks a lot, the Rafi title song is a Hindi Filmi classic and rightly pointed out to be of traditional genre.

  7. PC, you may be in Norway but you have opened up a wonderful world of Hindi film music to me.

I have grown up in England of Indian parents, so you would think I would be a prime Bollywood sing-a-song expert...well I'm not. Preferred punk, reggae and garage rock, in fact still do. But the 'funky' sounds of the '60s and '70s are totally up my street.

So thank you, for the hard work you have put into all this (including the reups)- for everyone to share the pleasure that you so evidently get from this music.

So today I wish you Happy Divali and best wishes for the future, Ajay (inspire121@mailworks.org)
