S.D. Burman: Prem Nagar (1974)

Prem Nagar

One more before the weekend; another late-period Sachin Dev Burman. And it's wonderful. 'Yeh Kaisa Sur Mandir' (for perfectly defining Bollywood's sitar & strings formula), 'Jaa Jaa Jaa' (for the bossa-tinged rhythm and dramatic breaks), 'Pyase Do Badan' (for its sexy seductiveness) and 'Bye Bye Miss' (for being fun and poppy with Shankar Jaikishan tendencies) are my favourites here - but there are moments on every track on 'Prem Nagar' that are worth listening out for. Top stuff!

Was RD involved with this one?

Track listing:
1. Kishore Kumar: Yeh Lal Rang
2. Lata Mangeshkar: Yeh Kaisa Sur Mandir
3. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle & Chorus: Yeh Thandi Havayen
4. Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar: Kis Ka Mahal Hai
5. Kishore Kumar: Jaa Jaa Jaa
6. Asha Bhosle: Pyase Do Badan
7. Kishore Kumar & Chorus: Bye Bye Miss

  4. Thanks PC !.

RD was not involved in this album.

The Assistants for the film were:

    Meera Dev Burman (SD's wife)

Anil-Arun (who had become SD's arrangers in the 70's)

Maruti Keer (One of RD's Assistants and his rhythm specialist)

However "Yeh laal rang" and RD's "Kahin karti hogi" fom Phir Kab Milogi (1974) sound similar.

  5. Senior Burman used to be very ill those days during the making of movies like Prem Nagar. RD's stamp has been there in all SD's scores right from 1966. However the final authority right till the last score of SD always remained with SD Burman. That final say is all that made the difference between a RD and a SD score!

  6. I wouldn't say the RD stamp is evident in all SDB scored from 1966. Basu and Manohari along with Anil-Arun arranged most of SD's 70's scores, and while RD influences may be there in those albums (its only natural when B-M were RD's assistants)...there is a distinct sound that RD had already developed which is not there in SD scores. Except for say Mili, Prem Pujari, Gambler, and some later scores, its mostly B-M and Anil-Arun (along with MDB) for SD in the 70's.

The 60's is a different story, as RD was the official assistant of SD then.

  7. I've just been made aware (thanks to meophamman) that 'Pyase Do Badan' was sampled by KutMasta Kurt for PMD's 'Straight From Da Heart' back in 2002. Sounds good.
