Rahul Dev Burman: Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973)

Aa Gale Lag Jaa

Another fine R.D. Burman score... seems as if he couldn't do anything wrong in 1973. 'Aa Gale Lag Jaa' [review] has a pleasant, quite mellow vibe to it... it's got bounce and all, but not as manic and intensely paced as a lot of his music from the period was.

'Tera Mujhse', featuring the then 11-year old Sushma Shreshta (aka Poornima), reminds me of the title track from 'Yaadon Ki Baaraat'. Asha Bhosle or Lata Mangeshkar were often called in to supply vocals for children; I like the fact they used an actual kid in this instance - Sushma's got a very nice voice. 'A Mere Bete' has a melody not entirely dissimilar to 'Haré Rama Haré Krishna's 'Dum Maro Dum'... Burman gets away with plagiarizing himself though as the arrangment is very different... good stuff. As is 'Waado Karo'; quintessential 70s Pancham pop, and the lovely 'Theme music'; sounding like an Indian Morricone/Edda dell’Orso piece.

  2. Yup, it's from 'Disco Dancer', 1982.
It was recently sampled by M.I.A. on her new album.

  4. Bappi Lahiri. Original copies turn up on eBay once in a while, and there's a cheap (probably crap) CD here: http://store.nehaflix.com/didakapakawa.html
    Never seen it blogged though.
