S.D. Burman: Kala Bazar (1960)

Kala Bazar

What a great soundtrack Sachin Dev Burman's 'Kala Bazar' is; as fine a collection of vintage Bollywood film songs as you're likely to find. It's an album full of sweetly hummable tunes, sumptuously arranged; partly traditional, partly modern; seasoned with a dash of exotic jazz and sprinkled with Latin flourishes. Pick your own favourites – mine include the beguiling 'Na Main Dhan Chahun' featuring Geeta Dutt and seldom heard Sudha Malhotra, Asha Bhosle's flirtatious 'Sach Hue Sapne Tere' and the exuberant bongo drum-driven cabaret number 'Sambhalo Sambhalo Apna Dil'.

Mohd. Rafi's contributions are also worth noting: 'Teri Dhoom Har Kahin' has a charming, rustic feel to it, and best of all, the score's biggest highlight 'Apni To Har Aah Ek' is a calm and contemplative musical reverie, sung over a soft, chugging train-wheel rhythm. It's written in an unusual time signature (7/4?), giving it an offbeat, droney quality of the sort that today might be termed psychedelic folk. Whatever the categorization, it's a beautiful song.

  3. Fabulous share. S.D.Burman and Mohd Rafi combo is so melodious before Kishore Kumar swooping bollywood music world. Dada Burman was no exception resulting Aradhana and others

  6. Mr,. Anonymous ! People like you always agree with any quality because it comes in your Hard Disk free and if a fellow raise question you can't tolerate as you think it may stop PC sharing don't worry he will serve you forever so keep your mouth shut and enjoy free music. It looks you don't know ABCD of music otherwise you wouldn't create new word for sound quality " Studio Quality " please don't use foolish word it just improves foolishness.

  7. I’m with Anonymous on this one. I prefer those who take music for free and "agree with any quality" to those that take music for free but still complain. Saying you’re not satisfied with the sound quality as you did in your initial comment, questioning my reasons for not "providing better" is just plain rude, despite your attempt to make the comment seem complimentary. Also, who the hell are you to tell visitors to my blog to keep their mouth shut?

  8. War of words has been started here as well pls don't make this blog where people just pull the legs of each other and PC doesn't tolerate even a healthy complain as we have seen it when someone raised a speed issue he promptly snubbed him. musicthug or mr anonymous why are you wasting ur precious time in such a unhealthy spat.

  12. In case those who, strangely, are still submitting comments on the above are wondering, I meant what I said about ending the discussion. You’re wasting your time; further comments won’t be published.

Of course, input on the actual post/record/music is still welcomed.

  17. 18. Hahaha... well, at least that answered my own previous question

  19. well.. reading those comments was a diverting waste of a few minutes. Personally, I come here to get curated music that I wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. If I wanted 'studio quality' I'd spend a fortune, and many hours, trying to secure copies of these, presumably, obscure recordings. To MFT3F I say keep up the good work.

  20. Oh really surprising. how you have not included iconic song of the movie "Khoya khoya chand" in your description, amazes me.

  21. The tracks I highlighted were merely examples of the many great songs on Kala Bazar, probably the ones closest to mind at the time of writing. 'Khoya Khoya Chand' is lovely too, which I'm sure anyone who listened to the album in its entirety would have figured out, even without my endorsement.
